CHIA

Chia seeds were one of the basic foods of Central America's civilizations alongside corn, these were so important that Maya culture made offerings of these seeds to the gods in gratitude for the harvest.

Chia seeds (Salvia Hispanic L.) belongs to Labiada (Lamiaceae) family and comes from Mexican highlands. These plants have a height 1.5 mt. The oldest record of Chia's farming is 3.500 years b.c. and the name comes from the original word "Chiactic" that means "Oily" on the region of Chiapas, South of Mexico.

According to the research of Peruvian University "UNIVERSIDAD AGRARIA", reveals that Chia seeds were farmed also by Incas, because Peru has many areas with growing conditions, after the Chia almost disappeared with the Spanish arrived.

These seeds are recognized for their high content of Omega 3 and vitamins A and B, controlling cholesterol and weight, also contains six times more calcium than milk, high levels of iron and two times more antioxidants than oranges.
